Castor oil (Ricinus communis) of commercial grade was obtained from the local oil store in Chennai, was used as raw material for biodiesel production. The impurities and moisture content in the feed stock castor oil was removed by filtration and drying in a hot air oven at ~120 °C.

A preliminary assessment of castor plant adaptability at Northern Portugal was performed, together with the evaluation of the extracted raw oil, without any refinement, for biodiesel production.
